Result…
In the 3rd game of the tour, Australia 7 for 202 c.c. (45 overs), defeated Yorkshire, all out for 192 off the 45th over. A great game of cricket.
The Ground…
The game was played at Harrogate Cricket Club established in 1877; its most famous player being Maurie Leyland a true Yorkshireman who played for England in the 1920s and 1930s.
Conditions…
Cloudy and mild. The pitch looked well prepared but with a decidedly green tinge.
Match Report – Australian Innings…
The Australian Captain was offered the toss by our gracious hosts and chose to bat. We lost opener Carr – bowled for 15.
1 for 27 off the first 10 overs.
Within the next 2 overs we lost the other opener Gaskell, LBW for 15 and Drescher, bowled for 2 …. then Richardson received a decidedly contentious LBW for 5 …. this wasn’t supposed to be part of the script …
4 for 59 off 20 overs.
We needed a solid partnership or two. Unfortunately that didn’t happen. Dedman stumped for 12, Russell caught first ball then, after a solid start, Harrison was bowled for 25.
7 for 109 off 30 overs.
Up stepped Quinn and Christiansen. No loss of wicket in the next 10 overs with a run rate of 5.9 per over. A partnership of 85.
7 for 168 off 40 overs
Quinn played aggressively all around the wicket with a flurry of 4s and retired at 50 n.o. off 46 balls. Christiansen provided an innings of character and determination and brought up his 50 with a 4 off the final ball . He made 51 off 60 balls. His innings was constantly encouraged with calls of ‘come on Dad’, from daughter Jess. After Quinn’s retirement, Lyon provided good support to Christiansen with 11 off 11 balls.
Australia’s Final Score – 7 for 202 c.c. off the allocated 45 overs.
Yorkshire Innings…
Run Rate Required – 4.48 per over. The new ball was taken by Bennett and Christiansen. The first 10 overs were reasonable but without any wickets falling and the batsmen were ticking over the scoreboard.
None for 41 off 10.
Apart from a wicket by Mick Kettle, it is fair to say that the next 10 overs were uneventful, without penetration and requiring a number of bowling changes; the batsmen were not being greatly troubled.
1 for 77 off 20 overs.
Again, nothing much for the bowlers over the next 10 overs with the batsmen in control.
1 for 126 off 30.
Yorkshire needs 76 runs off 15 overs with 9 batsmen in the shed. The only way to close them down is wickets. Up steps the skipper Harrison with 4 wickets for 15 runs off 6 overs; add to that another wicket to part time bowler and travelling Tasmanian GP, Dr Richardson.
6 for 169 off 40 overs.
Yorkshire needs 34 off 5 overs with 4 wickets in hand. Harrison gets a further wicket (bowled) and now has ‘a Michele’ – five/for. Harrison grabs another to make it 6 for. Bennett back on for his last 2 overs and picks up two fine wickets, both beautiful deliveries, both bowled.
All out for 192 off the 45th over. Australia wins.
Comments Received Regarding Reports…
I would like to thank those who have sent compliments about my reports thus far. There have been suggestions that they do not contain the same vitriol, rancour and defamatory comments about fellow team members that were consistently prevalent in reports during the 2015 UK tour. It should be noted that the 2015 reports were a joint collaboration between Greg Johnson and myself; …. so, if these reports so far are professionally constructed, sequential and factual ….. and without banal and puerile comments about fellow players and other members of the touring party ….. then would it not suggest that Greg Johnson was the cause of this vitriol and defamatory reporting last tour …… while trying to maintain his pretence of innocence by proffering that bespectacled benign little schoolboy smile of his!!!
